Choosing a game lodge in South Africa

There are so many private game lodges in South Africa that it can be hard to decide which one to visit. There are a couple of things to consider, including your budget of course. I love the Kruger Park and Sabi Sands area, finding it the most genuine of experiences with amazing and incredible Big Five sightings, but there are other safari parks, Madikwe, Pilansberg and Addo, where you can have an excellent experience too.

Things I would ask you, before deciding which game lodge to book.

  • Can you give me an idea of budget? There are lodges that are under R 5000 per person per night, and there are lodges that are over R 35000 per person per night.

  • Does the idea of a glamorous walk-in-safari-style tent appeal to you? One with en suite facilities.

  • Would you be more comfortable in a luxury suite with a private plunge pool and your own game viewing deck?

  • Are you looking for intimacy and something romantic, a smaller and more personal lodge?

  • Are you okay taking precautions against malaria?

  • Do you have kids and how old are they?

  • Is this your first safari?

  • Is there anything in particular you want to see? An area with huge herds of elephant and buffalo, an area renowned for its big cat sightings, and what about birds?

  • When are you thinking of travelling and how much time do you have?

Once I have a better idea of what you like or want, I can make suggestions for game lodges and give you an idea of the prices. If you want flights included, Federal Air fly daily from Johannesburg to the different parks, or there are flights from Cape Town on scheduled airlines. Most travellers from overseas will go on safari for a minimum of three nights. I would suggest one lodge, according to budget, but I would make sure it is an amazing one. And if a traveller has longer, I would recommend a combination of lodges in different areas.

We have incredible game viewing in South Africa. If wide open skies, amazing bush, beautiful animals, fab accommodation, gourmet food and adventure appeal to you, give me a call. I will tailor make a perfect South African safari for you.

x Sandi
